| Welcome to www.schipperkes.net. A Global network directory of Schipperkes for sale. The Schipperke originated centuries ago in the Flemish provinces of Belgium and is considered by authorities to have been developed from a native black sheepdog of that country. Because he was frequently seen on the barges of Belgium, the Schipperke was given the nickname of “Little Captain” and has often been called the Belgian Barge Dog. However, it is thought that the name originated from a less romantic Flemish name meaning “demure sheepdog”. The Schipperke appears thickset, sturdy and is a lively little black dog with plenty of coat, having an outstanding ruff and culottes, a foxy head, very expressive face and no tail, all forming a distinctive silhouette not closely resembling any other breed. He generally weighs between 12 and 18 pounds. The Schipperke is a watchdog. He is bright and has a high level of activity and curiosity. Schipperkes excel in agility, herding, obedience, and tracking. His primary aim in life is to be a constant companion to his family and to share in every phase of their life.
